Mahjong Game Rules & How It Works
Mahjong is a four-player strategy game where your goal is to form a winning hand consisting of four sets and one pair. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:
Starting Hand: Each player begins with 13 tiles. The dealer starts with 14 tiles.
Game Flow: Players take turns drawing tiles from the wall and discarding unwanted tiles. Your objective is to form a winning combination by creating sets of tiles.
Winning: The first player to form four sets (triples or sequences) and one pair declares “Mahjong” and wins the game!
If no one wins before all the tiles are used, the round ends in a draw.
Tile Combinations You Can Use to Win
To form a winning hand, you’ll need to combine tiles in specific ways. Here are the key combinations:
Pong – Three identical tiles (e.g., three bamboo 2s).
Chow – A sequence of three consecutive tiles in the same suit (e.g., 4-5-6 in circles).
Kong – Four identical tiles (this grants an extra turn).
Pair – Two identical tiles (e.g., two 8s).
Once you’ve assembled four sets and one pair, you can declare “Mahjong”, and the game ends. The winner’s score is calculated based on the hand they’ve formed.
